2011 Alakai California Red Wine
The 2011 Alakai from Joel Gott has aromas of wild cherry and raspberry, with spicy notes of white pepper and anise. On the palate, the wine has complexity and elegance, rounded out by ripe fruit flavors and smooth tannins.
For this vintage of Alakai, we blended Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignane to make a wine in the style of our favorite Southern Rhône and California Rhône-style wines. Fruit for this Grenache-based blend is sourced from Monterey and Knights Valley where windy, cool weather mimics the conditions in France’s Rhône Valley, and stresses the vines, creating smaller, more concentrated fruit clusters. During the 2011 harvest, late spring rains and a cool summer meant even smaller crops than normal and more time on the vine for the fruit. The low yields helped in ripening and created an even greater concentration of fruit and spice flavors.
