Tasting Notes

A·la·kai; [a-luh-KY]; noun

  1. a high plateau rainforest in Kauai; one of the few places where you can walk in the clouds; one of our favorite vacation destinations.
  2. a Rhone-style wine; a single-vintage, small-production red wine created by Sarah Gott; our favored style of wine to drink at home.
  3. a name; our cherished vineyard dog who passed away in 2005; a black Labrador retriever who loved to eat grapes and chase bungs.

Alakai is a Rhone-style wine composed of Syrah from Hyde Vineyards in Napa Valley, Grenache from Pelkan Ranch in Knights Valley and old-vine Mourvèdre from Oakley in California’s Delta region. Pelkan Ranch, where we get the Grenache, is Sarah’s father’s vineyard in the heart of Sonoma’s Knight’s Valley.  Each varietal was fermented separately in small vats then blended just prior to bottling.  The final blend shows off the meaty backbone of the Syrah, the spicy aroma of the Mourvèdre and the fruit forward, soft-mid pallet of the Grenache.  We fell in love with this blend and decided to bottle it up as a one time only release.  We made 148 cases – and already drank a few…

This is a deep, ruby-red wine with aromas of black cherries, cassis, pepper and subtle oak rounded out by sweet, soft tannins. It’s a medium to full-bodied wine with complexity, elegance and a long, lively finish.  Pair  this wine with roasted meats, fall desserts or drink all on its own.
